Flyers, Riley down St. Patrick 10-1

Going down took the St. Joseph Flyers up.

Pitcher Tanner Riley reverted back to his usual control as he pitched a 4-hitter with 15 strikeouts as the Flyers beat the Maysville (Ky.) St. Patrick Saints 10-1 Saturday.

“Riley kept the ball down today. His last game he threw it belt high and got hurt,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.

Besides his pitching, Riley and Justin Mahlmeister each went 2-4 as the Flyers collected 10 hits.

After a scoreless first inning, the Flyers got two runs in the second.

T.J. Young and Cody Blackburn walked and Spencer Schwab had an RBI single. Levi Hopkins reached on a fielder’s choice as Blackburn scored.

The lead went to 4-0 in the fourth.

With two outs, Payton Blair was safe on an error and stole second and third. Anthony Whaley was hit by a pitch, stole second and Riley had a two-run single.

St. Joseph got two more runs in the fifth to lead 6-0.
