Lady Panthers win 2nd straight title
COAL GROVE — Allison Chapman pitched like a champion, and in turn the Chesapeake Lady Panthers became one again.
Chapman pitched a one-hitter, struck out 14 and did not walk a batter as the Lady Panthers blanked the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 13-0 in five innings Friday to clinch at least a share of their second straight Ohio Valley Conference championship.
The Lady Panthers have two games remaining with River Valley.
“It’s a nice spot to be setting in,” said Chesapeake coach Aaron Rice. “Chapman pitched well again and we hit the ball really well. It was a good team effort.”
Sarah Mayo went 3-4 with a triple and a home run to lead an 11-hit attack. Courtney Heffner was 2-4 and Sarah Rice went 2-3 with two doubles and four runs batted in.
Chesapeake got a run in the first inning when Mayo reached on an error, stole second base and Sidney Boyle was safe on another error.
The Lady Panthers went up 3-0 in the second inning.
Myky Harmon walked, Macy Allen singled and Sarah Rice had a two-run double.
The lead went to 7-0 in the third inning.
Mayo singled to open the inning, Courtney Heffner tripled for a run and Caitlin followed with a two-out double for a run. Allen and Rice both reached on errors to produce two more runs.
Four more runs scored in the fourth inning to make it 11-0.
Mayo had a leadoff triple and Boyle hit a sacrifice fly. Courtney Heffner was hit by a pitch, Harmon walked and Taylor Riggs had an RBI single. Rice then spanked her second double to score two more runs.
Casey Kirk walked and Mayo crashed a two-run, 300-foot homer in the fifth inning to cap the scoring.
Chesapeake (13-6, 7-1) hosts Ashland, Ky., Monday.
