Lady Dragons win close one
PROCTORVILLE — Finally, a close one went their way.
After suffering several tough losses, the Fairland Lady Dragons beat the River Valley Lady Raiders 7-4 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We always make it interesting. This time it was nice to get a win in a close game,” said Fairland coach Joe Auxier.
Fairland is now 10-12 overall and 5-4 in the OVC with a game left at River Valley next Wednesday.
Sashe Burcham shut down the Lady Raiders on just four hits. She struck out 12 and walked two in going the distance.
Fairland went up 2-0 in the first inning when Jaimie Phillips and Haley Woodall singled, Keri Pinkerman reached on an error for a run and a sacrifice fly by Amber Bias.
An error, a dropped third strike and a ground out gave River Valley a run in the top of the third, but the Lady Dragons answered with two in the bottom of the inning.
Phillips walked, stole second and third and scored on a hit by Pinkerman. After a ground out moved the runner up Bias had an RBI single.
A single by Chynna Meshon, a walk and Jessica Burns’ two-run single got River Valley within 4-2 in the fourth, but again Fairland responded with two in the bottom of the inning.
Chelsea Stanley and Woodall singled and Phillips walked to load the bases. Pinkerman and Burcham both reached on errors as two runs scored.
River Valley got within 6-4 in the fifth on a walk and RBI singles by Mershon and Birchfield, but the Lady Dragons got an insurance run in the sixth when Burcham and Miranda Hayes singled and Keri Napier reached on an error.
Phillips was 2-2 and Woodall 2-4 as Fairland had 10 hits.
