SP girls finish 2nd in OVC

SOUTH POINT — A strong second half meant a second place.

The South Point Lady Pointers went 5-0 through their second time in the Ohio Valley Conference schedule including a win over league champion Chesapeake.

The strong finish gave the Lady Pointers sole possession of second place in the OVC race after beating the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 16-3 Friday.

The Lady Pointers are 13-10 overall and finish 7-3 in the OVC.

Ashley Smith did the bulk of the damage for the Lady Pointers. Smith was 3-for-4 with two home runs — one a grand slam — and drove in seven runs.

South Point jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Amy Lien singled and then stole second, third and home. Emilee Button singled, Kourtney Koukos walked and Smith had a two-run double. Tanner Miller followed with an RBI single.

South Point blew the game open with 12 runs in the second inning.

Katelyn Leonard singled, Button reached on an error and Koukos singled them home. Smith singled, Miller walked and Ashley Goodall singled to load the bases. Rachel Murnahan walked to force in a run, Hannah Kelley hit into a fielder’s choice for a run and Lien walked for a run.

Kaitlynn Christian singled, Button walked, Koukos singled and Smith cranked a grand slam.

Coal Grove got all its runs in the fourth inning.

Shelby Wilson singled, Taylor Fleming reached on a fielder’s choice, Shelby Haynes walked and Rikki Booth singled.

On Thursday, South Point dropped a tough 8-7 decision to the Greenup County Lady Musketeers in eight innings.

Greenup got the winning run in the eighth inning when Ashley Bates reached on an error and Destiny Jones hit a sacrifice fly.

South Point was guilty of eight errors.

After Greenup went up 3-0 in the first inning, South Point tied the game in the second.

Koukos doubled and scored on Smith’s sacrifice fly. Miller walked, moved up on a passed ball and scored when Goodall reached on an error. Murnahan put down a squeeze bunt to score Goodall.

South Point took a 4-3 lead in the third inning when Lien singled, stole second and third and scored on Button’s squeeze bunt.

The Lady Musketeers tied the game in the fourth only to have South Point get a run in the fourth on a triple by Lien and Button’s base hit.

Greenup went up 7-5 in the top of the sixth only to have South Point tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

Goodall singled and Murnahan doubled off the fence for a run. Courtesy runner Allison Mitchell stole third and scored on Brianna Whaley’s ground out.
