WHEELERSBURG — The South Point Lady Pointers should think about becoming escape artists, and Rachel Murnahan will be the headliner.

The Wheelersburg Lady Pirates had runners in scoring position in all but one inning of Friday’s Div. III sectional tournament final.

However, Murnahan pitched out of jams all but once as she stranded 10 runners and the Lady Pointers escaped with a 3-1 win.

Murnahan gave up eight hits but she struck out 11 and did not issue a walk.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when the Lady Pointers dented the scoreboard with a run.

Ashley Smith led off the inning with a double and pinch-runner Allison Mitchell went to third base on a passed ball. Murnahan then delivered a two-out RBI single.

South Point came back to score two more in the sixth inning.

With two outs, Emily Button was safe on an error, stole second base and scored on a hit by Courtney Koukos

Koukos then stole second and third and came home on Smith’s second double of the game.

Wheelersburg (8-5) got its run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Kelsey Jenkins reached on a one-out error, moved up on a hit by Kalyn Bailey and scored on a throwing error on the play.

Molly Knapp singled to put runners at second and third, but Murnahan got the next batter to pop out and end the game.

South Point (14-10) plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the district semifinals at Rio Grande.
