OAK HILL — Vernon Nelson of Oak Hill, died Monday, July 5, 2010, at his home. The Lawrence County native was born May 5, 1939, the son of the late Ellis and Leotia Conley Nelson.
Mr. Nelson  was a 1958 graduate of Decatur-Washington High School and loved to watch the Oak Hill basketball teams play.  He was a retired independent over-the-road truck driver and was a former tool pusher for the oil and gas industry.  
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters, Evelyn Nelson, Helen Brandell and Mary Lou Suddeth; and four brothers; Everett Nelson, Clifford Nelson, Floyd Nelson and Charles Nelson
Vernon is survived by a daughter, Christine Kerns of Thurman; a son, Greg Nelson of Willow Wood; a son, Neil Nelson of Covington, Ky.; a daughter, Angel Hester of Hampton, Va.; a daughter, Rebecca Nelson of Jackson; four sisters; Nora Dawson of Florida, Susan Webb of Pedro, Ruth A. Nelson of Chillicothe and Linda Roaleau of Dundee, Mich.; three brothers, John F. Nelson of Green River, Wyo., Mark Nelson of North Carolina and Glenn Nelson of Chillicothe; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday, at Phillips Funeral Home, with Rev. Brian Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Vernon Furnace Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 1until 3 p.m. at the funeral home. To offer condolences to the family please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.
