Flyers roll past New Boston in soccer opener

NEW BOSTON — The St. Joseph Flyers got off to a good start by getting off to a good start.

The Flyers began their soccer season Tuesday as they played well in a 6-2 win over the New Boston Tigers.

“We played total team ball to earn the victory. Our defenders and midfielders played extremely well,” said Flyers’ coach Dan Blair. “Justin Mahlmeister had an exception game in goal which included a stop on a point-blank penalty shot.”

St. Joseph took a 3-2 lead in the first half and then blitz New Boston 3-0 in the second half.

Senior Payton Blair led the Flyers with three goals and freshman Joseph Payton scored twice. Senior Tanner Riley also had a goal while senior Levi Hopkins dished out three assists. Blair also had an assist.

The Flyers host Greenup County, Ky., at 6 p.m. Thursday.
