FRANKLIN FURANCE — Green coach Dan McDavid looked around for a star of the game and couldn’t find one.

He found a whole team of them.

Using a total team effort, the Green Bobcats opened the season with a 40-6 romp of the Manchester Greyhounds Friday night.

“It’s hard to single anyone out because we played really well as a team,” said McDavid. “We played well defensively and offensively, our backs ran well, but our line did a real nice job. It was just everyone doing their job.”

The offensive blocking of center Dakota Blake, guards Bob McClain and Kaden Sampson, tackles Keith Stepp and Cory Hammond, tight end Trevor Otworth and split end T.J. McCloud helped the offense roll up 386 total yards.

Cody Bruce ran just four times but racked up 115 yards and two touchdowns for the Bobcats.

Robbie Applegate ran eight times for 71 yards, Chad Lewis had 65 yards on six carries and Tyler Hughes added 52 yards on six attempts as Green rushed for 329 yards as a team.

The Green defense limited Manchester to a mere 116 yards of total offense including 26 on the ground.

“Defensively we played excellent,” said McDavid. “They got a lot of their yardage when we went to a type of prevent defense.

“It was a total team effort. No one stood out more than anyone else. We did move Jacob Cochran to defensive tackle so he only had a week’s work and he had a really good ballgame.”

Bruce scooted 58 yards for a touchdown with 5:45 left in the first quarter to put Green up 6-0.

The Bobcats recovered a fumble on Manchester’s first play from scrimmage following the kickoff to set up a 1-yard scoring run by Steve Blanton. Stepp kicked the extra point for a 13-0 lead.

Bruce got his second touchdown on a 16-yard scamper and it was 20-0 with 9:12 left in the half.

Applegate ran 1-yard for a touchdown with just under five minutes to go in the quarter and it was 27-0.

Lewis burst through the Greyhounds’ defense for a 30-yard scoring run early in the second half as Green put the game out of reach. Hughes added a 5-yard TD run just before the end of the quarter to push the led to 40-0.
