OAK HILL — In a game where you need firepower on offense, the Chesapeake Panthers didn’t have enough bullets.
The Panthers managed to take an early lead and stayed close with a good defensive effort, but the Oak Hill offense proved too much as the Oaks pulled away to a 35-7 win Friday in the season opener for both teams.
Chesapeake went up 7-0 on a 7-yard pass from Austin McMaster to Brandon Noble with 1:37 left in the first quarter. Tommy Noble kicked the extra point.
Oak Hill finally tied the game with 5:46 left in the half on a 6-yard run by Westen Hale and the extra point kick by Dylan Lewis.
The Oaks didn’t take the lead until just 1:08 was left on the first half clock as Jesse Slone threw to Daniel Woods for a 7-yard scoring pass and it was 14-7.
It took the Oaks awhile to open up breathing room in the second half. Hale ran 3 yards for a touchdown with 5:59 left in the third quarter and Jesse Parker’s 9-yard TD reception pushed the lead to 28-7 with 3:21 on the clock.
Hale scored from 1-yard out with 11:16 to play to cap the scoring.
Patrick Hintz ran 13 times for 76 yards as Chesapeake had 132 yards on the ground.
Hale carried 18 times for 116 yards and became the school’s all-time leading rusher. The Oaks finished with 365 total yards with 147 coming on the ground while Slone was 10-of-18 for 218 yards and an interception.
