WILLOW WOOD — Imagine what the Symmes Valley Vikings might do when they get a little more relaxed.

The Vikings amassed 433 total yards including 344 on the ground as they opened the season with a 39-13 rout of the Racine Southern Tornadoes Friday.

“We played well. We may have taken them lightly, but hopefully we got our first game jitters out,” said Vikings’ coach Rusty Webb. “Being able to roll up 344, I thought our offensive line did a good job up front.”

Evan Herrell ran seven times for 107 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a touchdown pass to lead the Vikings’ offense.

Hunter Boggs scored three touchdowns and the Vikings’ first team defense held Southern to minus yards rushing.

Zach Beegle led Southern with 76 yards rushing on 21 carries, but he lost 50 yards in sacks or tackles for a loss.

“Our defensive front played better. We were able to get pressure on their quarterback,” said Webb.

The Vikings got off to a great start by recovering the opening kickoff. Five plays later Boggs scored on an 8-yard run to cap the 30-yard drive and Eli Ash’s conversion kick made it 7-0.

Herrell caught a 62- yard scoring strike from Cody Myers as the Vikings went 65 yards in just three plays to take a 14-0 first quarter lead.

Boggs had a 2-yard touchdown run and it was 20-0, but Beegle threw a 40-yard pass to John Gray and set up his own 5-yard scoring run as Southern cut the deficit to 20-6.

But the Vikings answered with a time consuming 80-yard, 13- play drive capped by Boggs’ 1-yard run and Ash’s kick put the lead at 27-6 at the break.

Following a short kickoff to start the second half, Herrell bolted 55 yards on the first play and it was 33-6.

Symmes Valley then put together a six-play, 53-yard drive that started in the third quarter and ended with 11:23 to play as Herrell raced 24 yards for the touchdown and it was 39-6.

Beegle ran 38 yards for a touchdown against the Vikings’ second unit and added the conversion run with 9:33 left to set the final score.
