Fairland can’t overcome offensive mistakes in loss to Meigs

POMEROY — It has been said that the best defense is a good offense. For the Fairland Dragons, the best defense for their opposition is a mistake-prone offense.

“Every time we had a big play we had a penalty. We had a 50-yard pass and we get called for a hold. We just had penalties at the wrong moment. We stopped ourselves,” said Fairland coach Dave Carroll.

The Dragons had two turnovers and were penalized 10 times for 92 yards. The offense generated 244 yards with quarterback Chad Fisher throwing for 84 yards and running for 142.

“Most of Chad’s yardage was just him running for his life. We just didn’t play. We didn’t do anything offensively,” said Carroll.

“Our game plan was sound. In the second half we did pretty well. We had one miscue in the second half when we missed an assignment and they scored.”

After holding Fairland at the Meigs 42 on fourth and 2, the Marauders went 52 yards in 10 plays capped by Zach Sayre’s 15-yard run. Christian Mugrage kicked the conversion and it was 7-0.

Meigs (1-1) threatened at the end of the quarter only to have Fairland’s defense put up a goal line stand at the 4-yard line as a pass fell incomplete.

Fairland had another goal line stand just before the end of the half and once again to start the third quarter as the Dragons stopped Meigs for no gain on a fourth-and-2 at the 6-yard line.

Charlie Barrett picked off a Fairland pass and ran it back 19 yards to midfield. Meigs scored this time as Cameron Bolin hit Colton Stewart with a 23-yard pass for the touchdown and a 13-0 lead with 11:17 left.

Fairland drove to the Meigs’ 10 only the have the drive stall when Fisher was sacked on a fourth down play for a 5-yard loss.

The Dragons used the running of Fisher to get on the scoreboard as he scooted 25 yards with 1:30 left and it was 13-6. The conversion pass failed.

Fairland attempted an onside kickoff but Jesse Smith recovered for Meigs to seal the win.
