Vikings run past Raiders

WILLOW WOOD — When Symmes Valley coach Rusty Webb saw the stat sheet and it had the Vikings rolling up 447 total yards, he said it didn’t take long to figure out why.

“When you get that type of offense, you’ve got guys getting it done up front. Our offensive line has done an excellent job and our backs do a great job blocking for each other,” said Webb.

The Vikings’ defense limited River Valley to 113 yards rushing on 35 carries and gave up just 30 yards passing.

“River Valley is much improved from last year. I thought our kids did an excellent job on defense. They did a couple of different things to us and our kids were able to adjust,” said Webb.

“After the first drive when we helped them out, our defense settled in and did a super job. We played a much more disciplined game on defense than last week.”

River Valley opened the game with a drive to the Vikings’ 6-yard line, but the defense held on downs and took over at the 4.

On the first play from scrimmage, Evan Herrell exploded for a 96-yard scoring run and Eli Ash kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Jacob Patterson returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter and it was 14-0.

Symmes Valley (2-0) then put together a seven-play, 80-yard drive capped by D.J. Miller’s 36 yard scoring run and it was 20-0 at the half.

Herrell ran the second half kickoff back 49 yards to set up a short seven-play, 34-yard scoring drive. Cody Myers ran 7 yards for the touchdown and then threw to Scott Dial for the conversion and it was 28-0 at the 8:13 mark of the third quarter.

After forcing the Raiders to punt following a three-and-out series, Herrell took a pass from Myers that resulted in a 58-yard scoring play. The conversion snap was bad, but Miller picked up the ball and ran for the conversion to make it 36-0.

Symmes Valley capped the scoring with a punishing seven-play, 55-yard drive capped by a 12-yard scoring run by Austin Owens. Ash kicked the conversion with two minutes left in the third quarter.

Herrell finished with 144 yards on just six carries as the Vikings racked up 291 yards rushing as a team. Miller added 61 yards on seven rushes while Myers was 6-of-9 passing for 146 yards.
