CHESAPEAKE — Once the Chesapeake Panthers lost control, they lost the game.

The Panthers surprised the Lucasville Valley Indians early, but an injury and the passing game of the Indians loosened their control and the Indians came back to post a 35-13 win Friday.

“We were controlling the game the first quarter and part of the second quarter. They hit a couple of passes and made some plays. We didn’t match up with them in the secondary after we lost McMaster,” said Panthers’ coach Phil Davis.

Chesapeake (0-4) took a 7-0 lead when Austin McMaster hit Brandon Noble with a 4-yard scoring pass. Jacob Wells kicked the conversion at the 1:39 mark.

Valley (4-0) finally scored with 3:54 left in the half on a 13-yard pass from Blake Yates to Alex Holcomb. Holcomb picked up a bad snap on the conversion play and ran for two points and an 8-7 lead.

McMaster was injured in the quarter and the Panthers quarterback and safety did not return.

Yates took advantage as he ran 12 yards for a score and it was 15-7 with 1:56 left in the half.

“Brandon Noble came in and did a fine job. We had to make some adjustments we didn’t want to make, but that’s the way it goes,” said Davis.

“But the kids played hard and we played physical against them. We can’t fault our effort.”

Yates took over in the third quarter as he ran 16 yards for a touchdown and threw a 12-yard scoring strike to Rob Dwyer as the lead went to 28-7.

Chesapeake scored on a 61-yard punt return by Noble with 3:10 to go.

The Indians came right back moments later to score when Holcomb got loose on a 43-yard run.

Holcomb finished with 125 yards on 12 carries and caught four passes for 51 yards. Yates was 12-of-20 passing for 144 yards.

Trey West ran nine times for 39 yards as the Panthers were held to 53 yards rushing and 44 passing.
