Coal Grove Hornets’ running back Boo Woods (2) follows the blocking of Greg Bender (22) as he gains some of his 184 yards in a 20-7 win over Greenup County, Ky., Friday.

COAL GROVE— The Coal Grove Hornets didn’t let any obstacles stop their mission.

Boo Woods ran 20 times for 184 yards and a touchdown and the Hornets overcame several critical mistakes to beat the Greenup County (Ky.) Musketeers 20-7 Friday.

The Hornets (4-1) rushed for 269 yards and had 318 total yards, but a lost fumble, suffered an interception and some key penalties that kept them out of the end zone on two different occasions.

But despite the self-inflicted mistakes, the Hornets were still able to come away with the win.

“Both sides made critical mistakes and gave both sides a chance to win,” said Hornets’ coach Dave Lucas. “I’m just glad our kids were able to pull it out. That’s a good win for us. Greenup County’s a good football team.”

Coal Grove took the opening kickoff and drove 61 yards in seven plays with fullback Bubba Wood carrying six times including the final 4 yards for the touchdown. He kicked the extra point and it was 7-0.

Greenup County (3-2) answered with a quick score as Corey Lyle broke free on a sweep and ran 72 yards for a touchdown. Wade Reed’s conversion kicked tied the game with 5:49 left in the first quarter.

But Coal Grove took the lead on a 3-yard run by Wood two minutes later and it was 13-7.

The Hornets had a chance to go up by two touchdowns in the second quarter but fumble the ball away going into the end zone and the Musketeers recovered.

Coal Grove also had a drive to the Musketeers’ 3-yard line in the fourth quarter, but two false start penalties back the football up and the Hornets couldn’t convert on fourth down.

Bryan Steele came up with an interception at the 37 yards line and Woods scored from there with one minute left and the Hornets extended their lead to 20-7.

Wood finished with 74 yards on 14 attempts for the Hornets.

“We have a lot of good backs,” said Lucas. “Boo has a lot of speed and Bubba runs hard, but (Greg) Bender can run and he blocks well for them. All three of them are good backs and any of them is capable of having a big night.”

Lyle led Greenup County (3-2) with 161 yards on 21 attempts. The Musketeers had 220 yards rushing and 260 total yards.
