WHEELERSBURG — Ohio EPA has just completed the third and final phase of remedial work at an abandoned landfill in Wheelersburg.
The work at Scioto Sanitation Landfill, 4465 Lick Run Lyra Road, will prevent further deterioration of the landfill due to erosion and the potential for a landfill slope failure.
Scioto Sanitation Landfill was a licensed landfill from 1962 until 1989. Municipal waste was placed up to 150 feet deep in a 30-acre area with minimal soil cover.
After the owner abandoned the facility, the Scioto County Common Pleas Court issued a consent order allowing Ohio EPA to perform necessary repairs at the landfill.
The work cost nearly $400,000 and was paid for with a combination of funding, including penalty monies from the owners/operators of Scioto Sanitation and approximately $75,000 in assistance from Ohio EPA’s Environmental Protection Remediation Fund (EPRF).
