COAL GROVE — When speed met size, speed won.
The Coal Grove Lady Hornets used their team speed to get past the bigger Portsmouth Lady Trojans 46-44 Thursday.
“Portsmouth is a big team and they do real well around the basket with those big girls,” said Coal Grove coach Rick Roach. “We were able to get out and run a little against their size.”
Ashland Adkins scored 14 points to lead a balanced Coal Grove offense. Hope Ratcliff had 9 points and Taylor Fleming 8 as eight different players scored.
“Everyone of my kids that came into the game did an outstanding job to get a team win,” said Roach.
Ri-chiel McGraw led Portsmouth with 18 points despite leaving the game with about four minutes to play due to a turned ankle.
Coal Grove led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter but just 23-22 at the break.
Portsmouth (0-2) rallied to take a 36-33 lead after three quarters before Coal Grove outscored the Lady Trojans 13-8 in the fourth quarter to get the win.
Coal Grove (2-1) plays at Lakeside Christian Academy in Morehead, Ky., on Monday.
