PROCTORVILLE — To say the Fairland Dragons had ample chances to win Tuesday night is an understatement of major proportions.

In all, the Dragons had 74 chances from the field and another 32 from the foul line. But instead of cashing in on those chances, the Dragons shot 32 percent from the field and 34 from the foul line in a 74-67 loss to the Huntington (W.Va.) St. Joseph Fighting Irish.

Fairland was 24 of 74 from the field including 8 of 32 from behind the 3-point line and just 11 of 32 from the foul line.

“It was a rough night for us from the field,” said Fairland coach Nathan Speed. “We had plenty of chances, we just couldn’t hit our shots from the field or the foul line. We played well enough to win.”

Fairland (1-1) had four players in double figures despite the cold shooting. Chad Fisher had 16 points to go with seven assists and two steals.

Jonathan Holbrook scored 15 points, Evan Salyers had 13 points and 11 rebounds despite playing on a bad ankle, and Jon Baise added 11 points. Matt Campbell grabbed eight rebounds.

St. Joseph (1-0) was led by Phil Harris with a game-high 26 points including 5 of 10 from behind the 3-point arc. Josh Pierson added 19 points, nine assists and three steals.

The Fighting Irish were up 15-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Harris — who hit four 3-pointers as he scored 14 points in the second quarter — helped fuel a 14-4 run that turned a 5-point lead into 15. The Irish then settled for a 38-28 lead at the half.

The Dragons scored the first 5 points of the second half only to have the Irish answer with the next 9 points and it was 53-43 after three quarters.

Fairland used a 7-0 run to get within four points in the fourth quarter, but the Irish converted 11 of 15 from the foul line down the stretch to secure the win.
