The Panthers took advantage of 28 Rock Hill turnovers and posted a 58-33 Ohio Valley Conference win Tuesday.

“If you turn the ball over against Chesapeake, they’re good at turning it into points,” said Rock Hill coach Bob Wilds. “We turned it over too much and they made us pay for it.”

The Redmen (2-1, 0-1) not only turned the ball over but they made just one of 13 field goal attempts in the first half, a 3-pointer by Trey Wilds.

“We played pretty good defense the first half, but we gave up too many points in the second half,” said Panthers’ coach Ryan Davis.

Chesapeake (2-0, 1-0) raced to an 11-0 lead and led 20-7 at the end of the quarter as Austin McMaster scored 12 of his 18 points.

While the Redmen couldn’t make a shot, McMaster was a 6 of 7 from the field in the first quarter and 7 of 9 in the half.

The Panthers extended their lead to 32-10 at the half.

Chesapeake coasted in the second half as each team scored 12 points in the third quarter and the Panthers outscored the Redmen 14-11 in the fourth quarter.

“We have to learn how to maintain our defensive intensity,” said Davis.

Besides McMaster, Colin Kennedy had 12 points and 10 rebounds while Nathan Copley finished with 14 points, five steals and four assists. Javon Thompson also had five steals and McMaster four.

Andy Knipp led Rock Hill with 11 points and four rebounds. Will McCollister pulled down eight rebounds and Mitchell Patterson had five.

The Panthers were 24 of 58 from the field for 41.3 percent. Rock Hill finished 9 of 30 for 30 percent but 4 of 10 from behind the arc.
