SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers need shooting and rebounding to win.

Saturday night they won.

Using strong shooting and rebounding, the Pointers were able to beat the Fairland Dragons 77-63 in an Ohio Valley Conference game Saturday.

“We played well. We rebounded much better. That’s the key to our season. We have to be able to rebound, and we shot better tonight,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes.

“That was a good all-around team effort. It was a good win. We needed that one.”

The Pointers (2-3, 1-1) were deadly at the foul line going 19 of 24 including 10 of 14 in the fourth quarter.

Blake Barnes led the Pointers with 21 points — 15 in the second half — despite sitting out the second quarter with a sprained ankle.

Kyle Winkler and Brandon Barnes scored 12 points each while Tevin Mitchell had 10 points. Austin Jeffreys and Will Hill added nine points each.

“Tevin Mitchell hit some big shots and our bench play was big. Jeffreys and Hill had 18 points between them. Zane Huron and Mike Leighty did a nice job inside and that’s what we needed.”

Evan Salyers led Fairland (2-2, 1-1) with 23 points. Jonathan Holbrook scored 18 points including four 3-pointers and Chad Fisher added 12 points.

South Point led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter before Fairland came back to take a 33-32 hafltime lead.

The Pointers pulled away to a 50-46 lead after the third quarter and then outscored the Dragons 27-17 in the final quarter.
