McDERMOTT — A high school game is 32 minutes long, not 29.

The Rock Hill Redwomen held their own for 29 minutes only to watch the Northwest Lady Mohawks pull away in the final three minutes to a 53-40 win Monday.

“We were right there and we were running our offense, but we missed some shots and turned the ball over a couple of times and they hit some shots and went up eight or nine,” said Rock Hill coach Alvin Carpenter.

After the Redwomen fell behind by 10 points with three minutes to play, they began to foul and the Lady Mohawks were 11 of 15 from the line including Devan Scarberry who hit 6 of 6 down the stretch.

“We had to put them on the line and they hit their shots. They did what they had to do to win and we couldn’t get anything going the last three or four minutes of the game.”

Chelsea Harper scored 21 points and Brittney Thompson 11 to lead the Redwomen (3-3). Thompson also had 11 rebounds with Dani Crabtree, Tommi Butler and Harper grabbing seven each.

Harper also had nine steals and Thompson three blocked shots.

Scarberry scored 15 points, Brittany Williams 14 and Kayla Clark 13 for Northwest.

Thompson had five points in the first quarter but Rock Hill trailed 11-9.

Harper scored eight in the second quarter as Rock Hill tied the game at the half, 20-20.

In the third quarter, Harper had eight more in the third quarter but Northwest managed to go up 34-32 and set up the late spurt by the Lady Mohawks.

PEDRO — It’s not good for your opponent to get board, at least when it refers to rebounding.

The Portsmouth West Lady Senators dominated the boards as they beat the Rock Hill Redwomen 64-50 Saturday in a non-league game.

The Lady Senators’ win overshadowed a career-high 25 points by Courtney Duncan — 17 in the second half — for the Redwomen. Chelsea Harper scored 19 points.

“We got a great game from Duncan and Harper shot well, too, but we didn’t rebound. Not having (Brittany) Thompson hurt,” said Carpenter.

Thompson — Rock Hill’s leading rebounder — missed the game due to an illness.

Tori Leader led all scorers as she scored 27 points for West (4-2) including 12 of 17 at the foul line and a 3-pointer.

West led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter despite seen points by Harper.

Harper had seven more points in the second quarter but West took control of the boards as they outrebounded the Redwomen 13-2 and outscored them 22-13 as they built a 36-24 lead at the break.

Duncan got eight points in the third quarter but West pulled ahead 52-36. Duncan got nine more in the fourth quarter but Rock Hill could not overcome the 16-point deficit.
