Despite cold shooting by both teams, the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings battled past the Rock Hill Redwomen 38-35 Monday.

Symmes Valley was just 11 of 45 from the field and Rock Hill 15 of 61. But the Lady Vikings 40-32 rebound advantage helped produce the win.

“If you would have told me that we shot 24 percent from the field and 41 from the line and still won the game, I would of thought that would be impossible to do,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Lisa Bryant.

Rock Hill coach Alvin Carpenter was at a loss over the poor shooting, but he said both teams had trouble making shots.

“We struggled offensively,” said Carpenter. “The shots were there. We got good looks, we just didn’t make them. I really can’t think of any time we forced shots except two or three times.

“Symmes Valley didn’t take any bad shots. They were within 10 feet or closer of the basket. They had trouble making shots, but they worked the ball around well.”

Kayla Hayes had 15 points, 10 rebounds and six steals to lead the Lady Vikings (4-4). Kalli Hunt pulled down 11 rebounds.

“Kayla Hayes played very well for us tonight and she hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to help win this game,” said Bryant.

“Neither team shot well but they both hustled on both ends of the floor. Give Rock Hill credit. They never quit the whole game. And I can’t say enough about how hard my kids played tonight.”

Rock Hill (4-5) led 8-4 after the first quarter. Rock Hill’s Tommi Butler had five points and the Lady Vikings’ Jessie Morris scored five in the second quarter as Symmes Valley rallied to take a 19-15 halftime lead.

The Redwomen got within 24-22 after three quarter and Brittany Thompson scored eight points in the fourth quarter. But Hayes had eight points including 4 of 6 from the foul line as the Lady Vikings held on for the win.
