CHESAPEAKE — Once the Chesapeake Lady Panthers got rolling they were hard to stop.

Chesapeake led by just two points after the first quarter, but then took off and beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 57-32 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Coal Grove played real well the first quarter. Coach (Rick) Roach had a good plan,” said Lady Panthers’ coach Chris Ball. “But once we finally got things going and turned them over we got going and just kept it going.”

Sarah Mayo had a strong all-around game with 19 points including four 3-pointers, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead Chesapeake (8-2, 4-1).

Amanda Ruffner had 18 points, nine rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots while Jackie Nelson had four assists.

“Mayo has been scoring some, but she is putting together complete games. She’s becoming a complete player,” said Ball.

Ashley Adkins had 10 points to lead the Lady Hornets (3-8, 0-4).

Mayo scored six points as Chesapeake led just 8-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Panthers outscored Coal Grove 22-6 in the second quarter as Mayo hit a pair of three-pointers and scored 10 points for a 30-12 lead at the break.

Ruffner scored eight points in the third quarter as the Lady Panthers pulled away to a 47-18 lead and coasted to the win.
