In a typical rivalry game, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets beat the Rock Hill Redwomen 51-43 Thursday in Ohio Valley Conference play.

“Rock Hill is extremely physical. It was a very aggressive game,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.

“My girls did a great job showing composure to hold onto the lead. Every girl for both teams played with a lot of heart. It was exactly what any Coal Grove-Rock Hill game should look like.”

Part of Coal Grove’s problems putting the game away came at the foul line. The Lady Hornets converted just 18 of 37 attempts.

“We need to work on our free throw shooting,” said Roach.

Rock Hill also struggled at the line. The Redwomen were only 6 of 20.

Ashley Adkins had 15 points and Taylor Fleming 12 to pace the Lady Hornets (4-9, 1-5). Darrien Hankins aided the offense with eight points.

The Redwomen (5-8, 1-4) were led by Chelsea Harper with 13 points including four 3-pointers. Courtney Duncan scored 11 and Brittany Thompson added nine.

Coal Grove led 11-7 at the end of the first quarter and 26-17 at the half.

Rock Hill got within 37-31 after three quarters but the Lady Hornets outscored the Redwomen 14-12 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
