PEDRO — A car accident backed up traffic and delayed the Wellston Lady Golden Rockets arrival Monday.

It also delayed the start of the Rock Hill Redwomen’s offense.

Rock Hill’s slow start enabled Welslton to take an 11-point lead and the Rockets held off a second half rally by the Redwomen to win 53-48.

“We had a late start and it must have rubbed off because we started late in the game offensively. We just didn’t score in the first quarter and that’s what beat us,” said Rock Hill coach Alvin Carpenter.

Rock Hill scored just three points in the first quarter as Wellston went up 12-3.

Jordan Davis scored eight points in the second quarter to take a 33-16 halftime lead.

Chelsea Harper had eight points in the third quarter as Rock Hill cut the deficit to 40-29.

Courtney Duncan scored seven points in the fourth quarter to key the comeback bid, but Davis converted 6 of 8 from the foul line to clinch the win.

Duncan had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the Redwomen (5-10). Chelsea Harper had 144 points while Tommi Butler grabbed eight rebounds.

Davis led Wellston with 20 points including 14 of 19 from the line. Taylor Mullins added 14 points.

On Saturday, Rock Hill dropped a 59-33 Ohio Valley Conference game to the River Valley Lady Raiders.

“We just didn’t play very well. It’s that simple,” said Carpenter.

Butler scored 13 points to lead the Redwomen (5-9, 1-5). Allie Neville scored 13 and Brooke Marcum 12 for River Valley (9-8, 4-4).

Rock Hill plays at Chesapeake Wednesday.
