PEDRO — For the Rock Hill Redmen, it was quality instead of quantity.

The Redmen took just 27 floor shots but made 15 and they converted 18 free throws as they beat the Coal Grove Hornets 53-35 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We shot well when we shot,” said Rock Hill coach Bob Wilds. “We didn’t get that many shots because they slowed the pace of the game. They like to make it hard for you to get in a good rhythm, but we had good concentration.”

Devin Darby and Shane Russell did the most of the offensive damage for the Redmen. Darby had a game-high 19 points and Russell scored 14.

Will McCollister and Andy Knipp had five rebounds each with Trey Wilds and Mitchell Patterson grabbing four apiece. Coach Wilds said everyone played their role well for the Redmen (6-9, 2-5).

“We had a lot of players contribute. We got good minutes from Jon Schwab and Mitchell Patterson,” said coach Wilds.

Devin Monnier scored 17 points to lead the Hornets (2-14,0-6).

Darby scored 10 points in the first quarter to offset seven by Monnier as Rock Hill took a 12-9 lead.

Russell and McCollister had five points each in the second quarter as Rock Hill pushed the lead to 25-16 at the half.

Patterson and Darby combined for nine points in the third quarter and the defense held Coal Grove to five points and it was 36-21.

The Redmen attempted only one field goal in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove began to foul with more than five minutes to play. Rock Hill was 15 of 23 from the line in the fourth quarter with Wilds making six and Russell five.
