SOUTH POINT — It wasn’t the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

Facing a Greenup County team with four players standing 6-foot-5 or taller, the South Point Pointers relied on their speed, quickness and shooting to beat the Musketeers 57-51 Tuesday.

“It was a great effort out of my guys,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes. “Greenup was huge. Our tallest guy is 6-3 and then we don’t have anyone over six-foot. We just pressed them and made them work the whole game.”

Kyle Winkler worked the taller Musketeers over for 18 points including four 3-pointers. South Point was 20 of 46 from the field with half their goals coming from behind the arc.

“Winkler gave us a great effort and with their size, we had to shoot a lot of 3s. We used fly swatters in practice to get them use to shooting over taller people,” said coach Barnes.

Blake Barnes had 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Pointers. He also eclipsed the 1,000-point career scoring mark and now has a total of 1,006 in his four-year career.

Austin Jeffreys and Brandon Barnes added 10 points each while Tevin Mitchell scored eight as the Pointers evened their record at 9-9.

Hayden Stephenson had 16 points and 6-7 Trey Williams 13 — only four in the first half — to lead the Musketeers (14-9).

Winkler hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter as South Point took an 18-14 lead. The Pointers led 29-23 at the half.

Jeffreys hit a pair of 3-pointers and Mitchell scored five points in the thir quarter and the Pointers held onto a 45-41 lead.

“Jeffrey’s baskets were big,” said coach Barnes. “They had a box-and-one on Blake so I told (Jeffreys and Mitchell) they had to make them pay and they did.”

South Point was 10 of 28 from the 3-point line.
