POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — The Fairland Lady Dragons did what they had to do and kept the Point Pleasant Lady Black Knights from doing what they needed.

With the outcome of the game hanging in the balance, the Lady Dragons made some key plays and shots to beat the Lady Black Knights 50-43 Monday in their regular season finale.

“It was a close game, but our girls stepped up at the end and made some plays that we needed to make,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan.

The win enabled Fairland to even its record at 10-10 heading into Saturday’s Div. III sectional tournament game at 1 p.m. against Ironton at Rock Hill High School.

Chandler Fulks had 14 points while Kayla Swiger finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists and five steals to lead the Lady Dragons.

Jaimie Phillips pulled down 11 rebounds as Fairland held a 39-29 advantage in that department.

“Defensively we had a good game. We didn’t rebound as well as we should have. We gave up too many second shots,” said Buchanan.

Sarah Hussell scored 14 points and Andrea Porter 13 for Pt. Pleasant (7-13).

Kerie Napier scored eight points in the first quarter as Fairland took a 12-8 lead.

Swiger had seven points to match seven by Hussell and the Lady Dragons led 27-22 at the half.

The Black Knights got within 35-32 at the end of the third quarter, but Fulks scored seven points in the fourth quarter as Fairland clinched the win.
