Winkler celebrated senior night with a career-high 25 points as the South Point Pointers beat the Coal Grove Hornets 59-42 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Tuesday.

“We didn’t play well and we didn’t shoot well,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes. “Kyle Winkler did play well. He saved us.”

Fellow senior Tevin Mitchell had 13 points while freshman Brandon Barnes scored 10 points — all in the first half.

Senior Mike Leighty had seven rebounds for the Pointers while Winkler grabbed six. Senior Blake Barnes added six rebounds and four assists.

Devin Monnier scored 18 points and Jacob Pauley eight to pace the Hornets (2-16, 1-7).

South Point (11-9, 6-4) led just 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, but Winkler scored 15 points in the second quarter as the Pointers pulled away to a 34-24 halftime lead.

A slow third quarter left the Pointers up 41-30 before Mitchell scored seven points in the fourth quarter and Winkler converted 6 of from the foul line.
