JACKSON — After dry shooting weather the first half, the field goals started to really rain in the second half.

South Point was just 12 of 32 from the field in the first half, then went to work in the second half to roll past the Portsmouth West Senators 83-50 Tuesday in the Division III sectional tournament.

The Pointers (12-9) led by only 10 points at the half, but Blake and Brandon Barnes combined to make 10 of 13 shots in the third quarter to ignite the offensive barrage.

“Our defense was fine in the first half, but the only way we could score was off offensive rebounds,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes.

“The rims opened up and it started to pour in the third and fourth quarters.”

Blake Barnes scored 31 points to lead South Point including 22 in the second half. Brandon Barnes had 11 of his 20 points in the third quarter.

The Pointers used full-court pressure to force West into 28 turnovers. Austin Jeffreys and Tre Campbell had four steals each and Kyle Winkler finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Adam Bricker scored 14 and Levi Ratliff 13 for the Senators.

West was 21 of 49 from the field and failed to connect on any of their 10 3-point attempts.

“They shot the 3-ball well in their last game. We made a push to take away the three,” said coach Barnes.

The Pointers led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and pulled away to a 29-19 lead at the half after a putback by Blake Barnes at the buzzer.

Blake Barnes was 6 of 7 from the field in the third quarter as he scored 14 points to go with Brandon Barnes’ 11 points and the Pointers built a 59-37 cushion.

The continued to build on their lead in the fourth quarter and Luke Adams came off the bench to hit a pair of 3-pointers as the Pointers’ biggest lead was the final score.

South Point plays Portsmouth at 5 p.m. Saturday in the sectional finals.
