PEDRO — A fire that destroyed a home in Pedro and sent one woman to the hospital for smoke inhalation is being ruled undetermined.

Investigators for the Division of State Fire Marshal found no evidence that a crime was committed at the home at 582 Township Road 343.

The fire began sometime around noon on Tuesday afternoon at the home of Charles and Shirley Stapleton. Their daughter, Daisy, was alone in the house, asleep in a basement bedroom.

Family members living nearby reported hearing explosions, but since no evidence was found that supports foul play, the fire marshal said the fire was most likely and accident.

The State Fire Marshal also said the a smoke alarm in the home, provided by the Elizabeth Township Fire Department through the Division of State Fire Marshal’s Project S.A.F.E., saved the woman’s life.

“We commend the Elizabeth Township Fire Department for helping its citizens to install working smoke alarms,” said Interim State Fire Marshal Don Cooper. “I am also extremely happy that Ms. Stapleton is alive today because she kept her smoke alarm in working order and knew exactly what to do when it sounded.”

James Stapleton, 31, one of the Stapleton’s 14 children, said the family suspected that the fire began in the attic of the two-story home, and ignited Charles Stapleton’s oxygen tanks as it spread through the house. The house was considered a complete loss.
