LLOYD, Ky. — So much for fast-pitch softball being a low-scoring, defensive game.
Battling cold and rainy weather, the South Point Lady Pointers outlasted the Greenup County Lady Musketeers 17-16 Friday.
“I told the girls that they have got to earn their runs. We can’t just give them away so easily,” said Lady Pointers coach Tara Layne.
Kayla Fletcher continued her torrid hitting as she led South Point’s offense by going 4-6 with two doubles and a pair of runs batted in.
“Kayla Fletcher has really been hitting the ball extremely well,” said Layne. “In our four games, she has gone 1-3, 2-3, 4-4 and 4-6. I couldn’t ask for much more than that.”
Andrea Kleinman was 3-5 with two doubles to aid the South Point win.
Both teams struggled defensively as they combined for 12 errors, seven by the Lady Pointers.
South Point led 17-12 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Greenup scored four times and had two runners on with no outs when the key play occurred.
Greenup hit a fly ball to right field where Hannah Carey made a tough catch. But the runner at second base failed to tag up and Carey threw the ball back to the infield for the double play. The next batter grounded out to end the game.
