SP girls turn back Fairland

PROCTORVILLE — Katelynn Leonard’s swung a big bat.
Leonard hit her first career home run and the South Point Lady Pointers beat the Fairland Lady Dragons 6-1 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Leonard went 2-4 with a double and three runs batted in as South Point stayed unbeaten in the OVC at 3-0. They are 7-1 overall.
“Our bats showed up tonight and no bat showed up bigger tonight than the of Katelynn Leonard,” said South Point coach Tara Layne.
The Lady Pointers took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run double by Leonard.
Fairland got its run in the bottom of the inning when Stormie Spitzer singled, Chelsey Stanley had a sacrifice bunt, Haley Woodall singled and Jaimie Phillips hit a sacrifice fly.
Leonard clubbed a solo home run in the sixth and make it 3-1.
The Lady Pointers scored two more runs in the inning when Ashley Goodall reached on an error, Andrea Kleinman’s RBI double, a fielder’s choice off the bat of Rachel Murnahan.
South Point added an insurance run in the seventh inning.
Kayla Fletcher singled, Leonard reached on an error and Goodall grounded out to drive in the run.
Fairland plays at Spring Valley (W.Va.) on Thursday and visits Gallipolis on Saturday for a doubleheader.
