Husband believed to have killed self

SOUTH POINT — Authorities are releasing very little information about a shooting very early Friday that left a South Point man dead and his wife hospitalized.

Robin D. Shepard, 50, of 204 Delores Ave., told Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies she and her husband, Larry E. Shepard, 60, of the same address, had argued earlier in the evening, but she thought the situation had improved and she went to bed.

Authorities said at some point Larry Shepard reportedly got a gun and shot his wife in the upper torso, according to a prepared statement from the sheriff’s office. The woman told authorities she was able to escape from the bedroom where she was when she was shot and called police.

Sheriff Jeff Lawless said when his deputies arrived they found the Larry Shepard dead of a gunshot wound to the head. A handgun was found in his hand.

Robin Shepard is listed in critical condition at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., according to hospital spokesman Charles Shumaker.
