By pleading guilty Friday, Simmons avoided being tried for the charge. A trial had been set for Monday, May 9.

DNA found on a bag recovered from the scene linked Simmons to the crime, Lawrence County Assistant Prosecutor Brigham Anderson said. The results from the DNA test were returned Thursday, he said.

Ironton Police arrested Simmons in February. IPD had originally been called to Shenanigans for a man and woman reportedly fighting, Chief Jim Carey told The Tribune following the arrest. When they arrived, Simmons fled. Drugs were found in a dryer vent of a nearby house, Carey said.

Simmons did not comment before his sentencing, his attorney Mike Gleichauf said. Gleichauf, too, declined comment.
