RUSSELL, Ky. — It had to happen.

After 33 years, it finally rained on Run By The River.

But lightning, thunder and a couple of soaking rains didn’t dampen the spirts of the record-setting 293 runners and walkers who braved the elements and filled the streets of Russell for the 34th annual East Greenup Kiwanis’ road race.

“You just have to take it,” said 5K men’s winner Tanner Alexander.

“When the lightening and thunder hit as I was passing the sewer plant (on the River Road) I said ‘whoa.’ But it was a fun run in the rain,” the 19-year-old Russell resident said.

Rain hit the run twice — early before registration began and again as the race started. By the time the lead runners passed underneath the Ironton-Russell Bridge it was a soaker, with a bit of slush in the downpour.

The weather led a few Mom’s and Dad’s pushing strollers to drop out and a number of other runners who were planning to do the 10K route switched to the 5K.

Alexander, who won Run By The River’s 10K in 2008 teamed this year with Jon Renneker of Catlettsburg to sweep the men’s divisions.

As a previous 10K winner, Alexander said he wanted to capture a victory in the 5K this time. So Renneker, who was runner-up in last year’s 5K agreed to take on the 10K course and try for a victory there.

It worked.

“I didn’t take the lead until after the 5 mile marker,” Renneker said, but in the end he powered to a 36:19 finish over Ron Duncan, 24, of Morehead who posted a time of 36:36.

Both winners are Georgetown College students, Alexander in his second year, Renneker will start there in the fall and both will be involved in the school’s ttrack and cross-country programs.

In high school, Alexander ran for Russell and Renneker for Ashland Paul Blazer.

Meanwhile, the 10K women’s crown went to Sarah Whitt, 32, of Sandy Hook, who posted a time of 47:38.

The 5K women’s trophy went to Jennifer Ross, 40, of Lavalette, W.Va. With a time of 21:49.

Proceeds from Run By The River are used by the Kiwanis Club for scholarships, support of a Terrific Kids program at Wurtland, food baskets at Thanksgiving and Shop With A Cop at Christmas.
