Charles Morrison

PORTSMOUTH — Charles Elisha Morrison, 93, of Portsmouth, formerly of Ironton, passed away Monday, June 13, 2011, at the Hill View Retirement Center in Portsmouth.

The Derby native was born July 30, 1917, the son of the late Charles Henry Morrison and Myrtle Warner Hurst Morrison.

He was preceded in death Jan. 28, 2011, by his wife Jeane Elizabeth Fisher Morrison whom he married March 17, 1946.

Mr. Morrison attended high school in South Bloomfield, was a graduate of Otterbein College and was a retired foundry foreman for Dayton Malleable Iron Company for 40 years before retiring in 1980. He was also a U.S. Navy World War II veteran were he served as a Communication’s Officer on a L.S.T. and a Captain of an L.C.I. He was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Ironton, and was a member of the United Methodist Men Adult Choir, a MYF Co-Advisor for many years, a chess expert and a member of the Huntington Chess Club.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and C. F. “Nick” Nichols and Ruth and Royden Johnson and a brother and sister-in-law, Wilbur H. and Jeanne E. Morrison.

He is survived by a daughter, Juliane Morrison McGowan of Columbus; three grandchildren, Jonathan Bruce McGowan of Reynoldsburg, Jenita Lynn McGowan of Cleveland, and Jessica Marie McGowan of Orlando, Fla.; his grandchildren’s father, Bruce McGowan of Columbus and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 101 North 5th Street, Ironton, with Dr. Wayne Young officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call from noon until the time of service at the church. Military rites will be conducted by the V.F.W Post 8850. Phillips Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
