Only two of those who filed to run in the upcoming general election won’t be on the November ballot.

On Thursday the Lawrence County Board of Elections certified the petitions of 136 candidates.

The board rejected the petitions of Chesapeake school board president Mike Dyer and Symmes Township fiscal officer candidate Juanita Thompson. Both petitions were thrown out because they lacked the required number of valid signatures of registered voters. In both cases candidates needed to have 25 valid signatures and could turn in a maximum of 75 names.

Dyer was running for a second term on the Chesapeake board. Although his four-year term was up, the Proctorville veterinarian had picked up a petition to run for the two-year unexpired term of Bill Pratt.

Pratt was named to the county commission this spring, putting his term on the ballot. Dyer would have faced retired Chesapeake sixth grade social studies teacher Jeanne Harmon. Now Harmon will run unopposed.

Dyer turned in 33 signatures with 23 deemed valid by the board.

Juanita Thompson had filed for Symmes Township fiscal officer to run against incumbent Patty Belville and challenger Linda Carpenter.

Thompson turned in 29 signatures with 24 declared valid.

There were 163 prospective candidates who had picked up petitions. Of those, 138 filed.

“More than usual didn’t turn in petitions,” said Eric Bradshaw, elections board deputy director.
