SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers used their bread-and-butter rushing attack early and often in a 48-16 win over the Green Bobcats.

The Pointers (1-1) racked up 524 yards rushing on the night with Tre’ Campbell leading the way with 213 yards on 10 carries and three touchdowns.

“It feels great to be able to come out after a hard week of practice and put it all together in the game,” Campbell said.

After a Green (1-1) punt to open the game, South Point wasted little time getting on the scoreboard when Campbell capped a eight-play, 64-yard drive with a 6-yard run. James Leonard added the extra point and the score was 7-0 with 6:49 to go in the first.

After another Bobcats punt, South Point moved 42 yards in three plays and was capped off by an 18-yard run by R.J. McCarty. Leonard added the extra point and the score was 14-0.

On the first play of their next possession, South Point’s Austin Majher stripped Green running back Rob Applegate and returned it 26 yards to the Bobcat 9-yard line. Majher would call his own number on the first play scoring from nine yards out. Leonard kick was good, and the score at the end of the first was 21-0.

The Pointers added to their lead early in the second quarter when Tre’ Campbell scored on a 34-yard run and went into the locker room at the half with a 28-0 lead.

“We had a good week of practice after not playing the way we wanted to last week (against Minford), and it was good to be able to translate the hard work from practice to the game,” South Point head coach Doug Shilot said.

“Every day, we stress blocking, tackling, and our running backs running hard. We were able to execute all of those things tonight.”

South Point scored twice in the third quarter to extend the lead to 42-0 on touchdown runs of 6 yards and 71 yards by Larry Brandon and Campbell.

After moving the ball to the Green six, South Point faced a fourth down. The Bobcat defense held and Green got on the scoreboard moving 94 yards on six plays. The drive was capped off by a 23-yard run from Kyle Frazier. Cody Bruce added the two-point conversion to make the score 42-8.

Gage Townson found the end zone for the Pointers midway through the fourth on a 32-yard run to make the score 48-8.

Clay Applegate rounded out the scoring when he scored from 18 yards out and Frazier added the two-point conversion to set the final score at 48-16.

“We are a better team than we showed tonight, but our kids are resilient and will bounce back,” Green head coach Dan McDavid said. “We just need to move forward, and it is just a mental thing that they have to overcome when playing bigger schools.”

Frazier led the Bobcats with 91 yards on six carries. Mike Avery added 65 yards on seven carries.

Larry Brandon finished the game with 86 yards on 10 carries. McCarty and Townson added 61 and 57 yards, respectively for the Pointers.

The Pointers travel to unbeaten Portsmouth West next Friday for a non-league game.
