Bobcats grind out 26-8 win

FRANKLIN FURNACE — The Green Bobcats like to chew up the clock, and their biggest eaters are the offensive line.

Behind solid blocking of the offensive line, Green ran for 204 yards to set up the passing game that generated 133 yards in a 26-8 win over the Hannan (W.Va.) Wildcats on Friday.

“We’re clock eaters,” said Green coach Dan McDavid. “Our offensive line played well and enabled us to take time off the clock.”

Center Dakota Blake, guards Kaden Sampson, Bob McClain and Mark Martin, tackles Casey Frazier and Corey Hammond, and freshmen tight ends Chris Vestal and Mark Allen opened holes for five different running backs.

Robbie Applegate ran 11 times for 65 yards and Mike Avery had 12 carries for 64 yards and a touchdown to lead the ground game.

Quarterback Cody Bruce was 9 of 12 passing for 133 yards and three touchdowns. Steven Ratcliff had three catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Clay Applegate also had three receptions for 37 yards and Allen had a TD catch.

Hannan (1-2) was limited to 111 total yards — just one passing — with 49 in the first half and only one yard in the third quarter.

Sampson led the defensive effort with 14 tackles after switching to middle linebacker this week.

Christopher Smith ran 18 times for 54 yards and Hannan’s lone touchdown with 4:30 to play. Korbon McDonald added 35yads on six rushes.

Green (2-1) drove 67 yards in 14 plays to score with 5:08 left in the first quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Bruce to Allen.

After a scoreless second quarter, the Bobcats got going with a 20-point outburst in the third quarter.

Green went 64 yards in eight plays with Bruce hitting Ratcliff for 30 yards and a score. Avery caught the conversion pass to make it 14-0.

A 25-yard run by Robbie Applegate, A 19-yard gallop by Avery and a 15-yard pass to Clay Applegate enabled Green to cover 65 yards in five plays. Levi Mollett ran 5 yards for the score and it was 20-0.

Kyle Frazier picked off a Hannan pass and returned it 30 yards to set up a 31-yards scoring strike from Bruce to Ratcliff with 1:12 left in the quarter.
