PROCTORVILLE — Fairland coach Dave Carroll knows looks aren’t everything, but he liked the looks of things Friday night.
The Dragons turned in a good-looking offensive performance as they rolled past the Tolsia (W.Va.) Rebels 47-27.
“We looked like a football team tonight. We knew what to do and we executed. The only reason they scored as much as they did was because of turnovers. We lost three fumbles that gave them a short field and they scored each time,” said Carroll.
Fairland (1-2) amassed 505 yards on the ground led by Nathan Campbell who ran 10 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
But Campbell wasn’t alone. Eric Riley carried 14 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns while Tyree Ceasar had 16 carries for 147 yards and two scores.
“We played well. We had a lot of people step up. We needed it,” said Carroll.
The Dragons needed just four plays to score as Campbell bolted 56 yards for a 6-0 lead.
Following a bad snap on a punt, the Dragons got the ball at the Tolsia 16 and Ceasar scored on a 9-yard run. Cody Midkiff kicked the conversion and it was 13-0.
Campbell scored on a 77-yard jaunt on first down following a Tolsia punt and the lead was 20-0 with 5:15 left in the quarter.
Tolsia (0-3) scored late in the half on a 7-play drive that covered just 48 yards. Jacob Copley ran 5 yards and Tyler Copley kicked the conversion.
On the first play after the kickoff, Ceasar ran 55 yards to make it 27-7.
Tolsia scored with just under a minute to play on a 19-yard pass from Jacob Copley to Morgan Williamson and it was 27-15.
But the Dragons struck quickly once again. A short kickoff led the ball at the 35-yard line and two plays later Riley got loose on a 31-yard scoring run and it was 33-15 at the break.
Fairland went 53 yard in seven plays capped by Riley’s 19-yard run with 2:56 left in the third quarter.
The Rebels recovered a fumble at the 35 and three plays later Jacob Copley scored from 25 yards out and it was 40-21.
Riley’s 11-yard scoring run capped a 51-yard, 6-play drive with 8:07 to go that opened up a 47-21 lead.
Jacob Copley ran for 115 yards and was 14 of 26 passing for 152 yards but he suffered two interceptions.
