UPDATE: Logging accident kills one

A Rome fire department truck sits at the entrance of a side road off County Road 402 Tuesday afternoon following a one-vehicle accident involving a logging truck.

ROME TOWNSHIP — A logging accident killed a Pedro man Tuesday morning.

Matt Bloomfield, 25, was killed approximately 3/4 of a mile off County Road 402 in Rome Township.

Bloomfield, of 12246 State Route 93, Pedro, was an employee of Sarks Logging and was operating a log skidder vehicle when it overturned and crushed the man, according to Sheriff Jeff Lawless.

Bill Nenni, assistant to the Lawrence County Coroner, pronounced him dead at the scene.

Along with the sheriff’s department, four officers from the Proctorville Volunteer Police Department and two officers from Rome Volunteer Fire Department assisted in assessing the scene.

“This is a tragic accident,” Lawless said. “There doesn’t appear to be a whole lot to investigate.”

The accident occurred just after 11 a.m.
