The Vikings were the team making big plays as they ran past the Tartans 42-12 on Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“East is a big play team and they only got one big play on us. Our kids did a good job defensively,” said Vikings’ coach Rusty Webb.

The Vikings (6-1, 2-0) had four double-digit touchdown runs as they amassed 389 total yards, all on the ground. They did not attempt a pass.

Alec Herrell ran 14 times for 168 yards and a touchdown while D.J. Miller carried 11 times for 102 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Vikings.

“Other than a small span in third quarter I felt our kids played good football,” said Webb. “They have two kids who stand out and can run very fast. Our kids made the adjustment and I’m very pleased with the way they played in all three phases of the game.”

Cody Belveal ran 75 yards on the second play of the game to give East (4-3, 0-2) a 6-0 lead, but the Vikings scored 39 unanswered points to get the easy win. Grant Foster blocked the kick on the extra point.

The Vikings went 50 yards in six plays with Jordan Fulford scoring on the first of two 1-yard scoring runs and it was 7-6 after Eli Ash’s kick.

After the Vikings came up with an interception, Herrell ran 61 yards on the next play for a score. Miller ran for the conversion and it was 15-6.

Jacob Greybeal recovered a fumble at the East 47 and Miller scored on the next play to make it 22-6.

Symmes Valley forced a punt and then went 50 yards in just two plays as Miller bolted 19 yards for the score and 29-6 lead.

The teams traded fumbles to start the second half and it led to Miller’s 12-yard scoring run that extended the lead to 36-6 after three quarters.

East went 63 yards in 14 plays aid by three Viking penalties and Belveal scored on a 7-yard run to make it 36-12.

Scott Dial intercepted a pass to set up an 11-play, 60-yard drive capped by Fulford’s second 1-yard plunge.
