Year one: The Ironton St. Joseph Flyers.
Playing in the first Lawrence County soccer championship game, the Flyers beat the South Point Pointer 3-2 to claim the 3-team league trophy.
“It was an exciting and fun game for the fans to watch,” said Flyers’ coach Dan Blair. “Both teams played a hard, physical game and the score went back and forth.”
The league consists of St. Joseph, South Point and Chesapeake. The schools are hoping to add other teams in the future with the champion getting a traveling trophy that is kept by the winning team for a year.
The Flyers won all four meetings in the round robin schedule.
Eli Lewis scored two goals, one off an assisted pass from Joseph Payton and another off a pass from Sidney Payne. Haley Bartram scored the winning goal with Payton handing out the assist.
St. Joseph (10-4-1) hosts Point Pleasant, W.Va., at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. South Point is now 7-5-3.
