Fairland earns trip to state XC meet

PICKERINGTON — The Fairland Dragons have one more trophy and one more day to run.

The Dragons won the boys’ Division II Region 7 cross country championship on Saturday at Pickerington High School.

Led by Raine Wireman and Tanner Mattie who finished fifth and sixth overall, respectively, the Dragons had 57 points to finish ahead of runner-up Granville that had 74 points. Unioto was third with 92 points and St. Clairsville was fourth at 125.

The top four teams advance to the state meet next Saturday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron.

“The boys ran great,” said Fairland coach Chuck Wentz. “The boys have had a great season. The regional meet had many state ranked teams and the hard work the team has put in paid off with a regional championship.”

Wireman ran a 16:55.02 while Mattie had a 16:57.48 time.

Rounding out the top five scorers were No. 15 Ryan Stewart at 17:27.15, No. 17 Logan Rowe at 17:31.05 and No. 19 had McComas had a 17:31.78 time.

Fairland’s other two entries were No. 61 Josh Sifford at 18:40.57 and No. 82 Zack Fannin at 19:12.69.

The trip to the state meet marks the first Fairland athletic team to advance to the state tournament since the 1961 basketball team.

Rock Hill’s Aaron Dalton was No. 73 at he ran a 19:33.10 in the boys’ Division III Region 11 meet.

The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers had 376 points and were No. 16 in the girls Division III Region 11 meet.

Ariel Schweickart ran a 22:44.92 to lead Ironton and finish No. 68 overall. Maggie Thomas was next at No. 95 with a 23:39.21 times.

Kaylie Sturgill was No. 105 with a 24:13.39 time, Shannon Walker had a 24:48.91 clocking to place No. 110 and Hannah Cronacher was No.117 with a 25:38.323 time.

Also for Ironton were Brooklyn Shope at No. 120 with a 25:57.95 time and Ashton McMackin was No. 124 with a 26:45.15 time.

In the girls’ Division II Region 7 meet, the Fairland Lady Dragons were seventh as a team with 211 points. Zane Trace won with 69 points followed by Granville with 92 points.

Shanon Ashton ran a 20:20.14 time and was No. 21 to pace Fairland. Sidney Pettit was No. 58 at 21:32.27 followed by Jessica Price at No. 71 with a 22:00.34 time and Sarah Warnock ran a 22:29.50 to place No. 81.

Completing the Fairland team times were Carrie Tanner at No. 114 with a 24:13.65 and No. 118 Savanah Nelson at 24:24.42.

South Point’s Sara Letchford finished No. 65 with a 21:48.13 time.
