They’re taking their show on the road.

The Ironton High School Varsity Singers has been selected to perform at the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) 2011 Student Achievement Fair Nov. 15 in Columbus. The student group is one of just five in the state chosen to perform at the fair, which is a highlight of OSBA’s 56th annual Capital Conference and Trade Show.

“They’re pretty excited about it,” Kathy Price, choir director, said. “They’ll probably do a combination of pop, maybe a folk number or a spiritual and maybe a golden oldie or two.”

The group, representing OSBA’s Southeast Region, will perform from 12:40 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Hall D of the Greater Columbus Convention Center in downtown Columbus.

The OSBA Student Achievement Fair is a showcase of innovative programs that Ohio public school districts have created to promote exceptional student achievement. The overwhelmingly successful event will highlight 100 outstanding initiatives from Ohio school districts.

The concert is an avenue to showcase the school’s talent, Price said.

“This is an elite performance group,” she explained. “We usually have 20 members but we have an abundance of talent so we have 26 (members) this year.”

More than 10,000 public school board members, administrators and guests are expected to attend the Capital Conference, the second-largest education convention in the United States.

In addition, more than 600 exhibitors will display their goods and services at the Trade Show, the nation’s largest education trade exhibition.

The conference runs from Nov. 13-16.
