James Baldwin

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — James W. Baldwin, 60 of Lafayette, died at 3:10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at his residence.

Born on Sept. 25, 1951, in Ironton, he was the son of the late Clifford and Bessie Hieronimus Baldwin.  He was a 1969 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School.

On July 27, 1993, he married Rena A. Quade in Custer, S. D., and she survives.  Mr. Baldwin was a service technician at Fairfield Manufacturing for 37 1/2 years.  He enjoyed softball, golf, bowling and spending time with his family.  He was a Cincinnati Reds, Ohio State Buckeyes, Indianapolis Colts, and Nascar fan.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Jennifer Baldwin of Lafayette and Cheryl (Baldwin) Eckman of Whitestown; a sister, Deborah Taylor (husband, Mike) of Lafayette; and three grandchildren, Nikita, James, and Ashlynn Baldwin.

Visitation from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Hippensteel Funeral Home.  Private funeral service Tuesday, Linda Regnier officiating.  Burial to follow at Wyandotte Cemetery in Dayton.  Memorial contributions may be sent to the I.U. Carl Maines

Carl Edward Maines, 88, of Ironton, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

The Lawrence County native was born March 26, 1923, the son of the late Robert and Anna Webb Maines. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nellie V. Lovejoy Maines, who died April 30, 1999.

He attended Ironton City Schools and was an Army WWII veteran. He also served in the National Guard during the Korean Conflict. He was a former employee for Allied Chemical Semet Solvay for 28 years and retired from the Ironton Coke Plant. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene and lived all his life in Lawrence County. He was a member of the Elks and American Legion in Ironton.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Ann Maines; a sister, Evelyn Korczynski and a brother, Robert Maines, Jr.

He is survived by a daughter, Carla Jean Maines of Ironton; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and William “Ben” Brown of Flatwoods, Ky.; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Lawrence Waddell of Franklin Furnace; a son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Sue Maines of Ironton; a son, SSgt. Michael Maines of Ft. Benning, Ga.; a sister, Roberta Dever of Ashland, Ky.; nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Rob Hale officiating. Burial will follow Woodland Cemetery with military graveside rites by VFW 8850. Joseph Smith

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Joseph Bryan Smith, 55 of Salt Lake City, passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011. The Orlando, Fla., was born Oct. 6, 1955, the son of the late Joseph and Joyce Bellomy Smith.

Mr. Smith attended Ironton City Schools and was a self-employed truck driver. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran.

He is survived by a sister, Jane Ellen Smith of Ironton; a brother and sister-in-law, George and Rose Smith of Columbus; and a niece, Joyce Huff of Ironton.

Donnalene Cook

CHESAPEAKE — Donnalene Mary Cook, 69, of Chesapeake, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. She was the wife of Edison L. Cook, who survives. Funeral services will be noon Monday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Roach officiating. Burial will follow in Cook and Daniels Cemetery, Chesapeake.. Jarrett Yates

COMMERCIAL POINT — Jarrett Scott Yates, newborn son of Scott D. and Susan L. Lovejoy Yates of Commercial Point, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by paternal grandparents, Ben and Catharine Yates of Ironton; maternal grandparents, Kennith and Carol Lovejoy of South Point; maternal great grandfather, Kenneth Honaker of Barboursville, W.Va.; and paternal great grandmother, Nellie Steele of Ironton.

Martha Christian

Martha Pearl Christian, 89, of Ironton, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Phillips Funeral Home.
