Clutch plays give Flyers win over East

SCIOTOVILLE — It was a clutch performance.

The St. Joseph Flyers came up with the clutch plays they needed as they beat the Sciotoville East Tartans 50-39 on Tuesday.

The Flyers (1-1) led by just one point heading in the fourth quarter. Justin Mahlmeister and Troy Scott took over offensively as St. Joseph outscored East 25-15.

“We hits shots when we needed and we got some stops when we needed. Justin had some big rebounds at the end of the game.,” said Flyers’ coach Jeremy Williams.

Mahlmeister had big game with 31 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Scott had 14 points while Zack Dalton and Johnson had six rebounds each and Ike Palmer had four steals.

Mahlmeister scored 6of the Flyers’ 8 points in the first quarter and it was 8-7. The lead was 14-12 at the half.

Mahlmeister scored 9 points in the third quarter but East closed to within 25-24.

But in the fourth quarter Mahlmeister had 14 points including 6 of 8 from the line and Scott added 7 more to clinch the win.

“Justin hit some big shots, especially in the fourth quarter. Troy stepped up for a freshman and hit some big shots,” said Williams.

“We ended the game well. We just couldn’t get anything going in the first half. We had some guys in foul trouble and Lane (Johnson) and Joseph (Payton) gave us some good minutes.”

Patrick Bias scored 20 points to lead East.
