Another successful Secret Santa comes to close

In less than a week another Secret Santa holiday campaign will be over.

“We are wrapping everything up literally and figuratively,” said Casey Baker, coordinator of this year’s Secret Santa.

The campaign is the work of the Young Professionals, an organization of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. Its goal is to provide warm clothing and gifts for needy children in the county.

This year there will be 510 children getting help this holiday from the program.

“We have the same mix as we always have (as far as ages),” Baker said. “I do think that going through the schools has definitely refined the group of children we are helping who really do need help. You see that reflected on some of the requests. There are fewer requests for video games, but for winter coats and shampoo.

“Our donors like to see there really is a need that is being satisfied. One of the things that continues to amaze me is how willing people are to give. That there really is a need, you see that willingness multiply.”

About 55 percent of the children helped have sponsors who have covered the cost of the gifts and done the actual shopping. Those sponsors may be individuals, church groups, school or civic organizations or businesses.

Also, 70 sponsors will be doing the shopping for the Young Professionals, who are paying for the gifts.

“That is a reflection of the community turning out to assist us with the burden of getting things done,” Baker said.

Gifts will be distributed on Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. Parents will be notified of the time and location for the pickup in a letter to be received by Tuesday.

Although this year’s program is drawing to a close, donations can still be made. That money will go into the 2012 Christmas program.

“One of the big reasons we were able to get this going so much earlier was we had a little bit of money left over from last year,” Baker said.

If anyone wishes to make a contribution to next year’s program, that can be done by writing a check to LEDC Secret Santa and send to the Chamber of Commerce, 216 Collins Ave., South Point, OH 45680.

If parents haven’t received a letter about the distribution, they should email the Young Professionals for their pickup time. The email is LCYPGroup@gmail.com.
