COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets played the match game. Now, they’re playing to get ahead.

The Lady Hornets cruised past Elliott County, Ky., 69-35 on Saturday in the first annual “River Battle” for their fourth win of the season.

The win total matches the entire total of wins from last season.

“We shot the ball pretty well. We were around 50 percent,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach. “Our inside game allowed our shooters to knock down a couple of 3’s each.”

Knocking down the 3’s and other shots were Jacy Jones with 23 points and Ashley Adkins with 13. She also had 7 assists.

“The most important thing we did was a great job of being unselfish with the ball. We ended up with 21 assists. Adkins had seven which is outstanding,” said Roach.

“I have a great bench that is able to come in and play solid defense and make a few shots when needed.”

Coal Grove (4-0) led 16-10 at the end of the first quarter and then pulled away to a 35-19 lead at the half.

The Lady Hornets outscored Elliott County 18-7 in the third quarter to lead 53-26.
