CHESAPEAKE — Investigators from the state fire marshal were back in Lawrence County Thursday as they continued to look into a fire that destroyed part of a storage building in Chesapeake earlier in the month.

“They are working on the case today,” Shane Cartmill, public information officer for the fire marshal, said on Thursday. “They are working on reviewing reports of the fire department and doing additional interviews.”

On the evening of Dec. 12, a fire broke out at the Convenient Storage Mini-Units by the Sixth Street Bridge at 6 p.m. Crews from the Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Department fought the blaze with pumper trucks for four hours, returning the next morning when the site rekindled.

There were 36 units with contents affected — half of them by fire and the rest had smoke damage. Many of the units were left as mangled rubble.

A day after the fire, investigators were on the scene, but were not able to rule out if the blaze was accidental or was intentionally set. Witnesses and first responders were interviewed then.

Those individuals and others were the focus of Thursday’s review to determine if any additional information could be discovered

“I don’t anticipate a ruling (Thursday),” Cartmill said. “It is still an active case.”

The fire marshal’s office has also not released the origin of the blaze. There were no injuries.
